RUNT plate lookup: what it returns and how a fleet uses it

RUNT is the national registry where the administrative truth about every vehicle and driver in Colombia lives. For a fleet it is the fastest way to check whether the registration card matches reality.

What it is and what it holds

The national traffic registry consolidates information on vehicles, drivers, licenses, insurance and paperwork. It is the source authorities check and the one updated when a transfer, registration or renewal happens.

Two lookups matter to a fleet: the vehicle by plate and the driver by ID. The first tells you what the vehicle is and its administrative status; the second, whether the license is valid and for which category.

What a plate lookup returns

Vehicle identification

Make, line, model year, engine displacement, color, body type, and engine and chassis numbers.

Service class

Private, public or special. This is the field that determines which inspection and operating rules apply.

Vehicle status

Active, with ownership limitations, or reported stolen, which is key information before taking in a used vehicle.

Associated validity

Whether insurance and roadworthiness certificates are registered, useful to contrast against the documents handed to you.

The problem with checking forty plates

The manual lookup is designed for one vehicle at a time. For a fleet taking in twenty units, or revalidating its inventory once a year, that is hours of typing and pasting into a sheet.

That is where automation earns its keep: load the plate list once, let validation run on its own, and keep only the differences, which are usually two or three out of forty.

The point is not the lookup itself but what you do with the difference. A plate whose service class is not what you assumed changes the inspection calendar for that vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Does a RUNT plate lookup cost anything?

The basic vehicle information lookup is free on the official portal. Formal certificates and paperwork carry a fee and go through authorized channels.

Can I use it to check traffic fines?

Fines live in SIMIT, which is a different registry. RUNT tells you what the vehicle is and its administrative status; SIMIT tells you what it owes.

Can I validate my whole fleet at once?

Not through the public lookup, which is built for one plate at a time. Fleet platforms run that validation in bulk when importing the inventory and surface only the inconsistencies.
