SOAT: what it really covers and how not to let it lapse in a fleet

Most people assume SOAT covers them in a crash. It covers people, not vehicles, and that confusion shows up at the worst possible moment.

What it covers and what it does not

SOAT is mandatory insurance aimed at the victims of traffic accidents. It covers medical care, disability, death and funeral expenses, and victim transport, up to the caps defined by law.

It does not cover damage to your vehicle, nor material damage you cause to third parties. That is what liability or comprehensive cover is for, and it is bought separately.

For a fleet the difference is operational: SOAT lets you circulate and protects people, but repairing the truck comes from another policy or from your own pocket.

Validity is per vehicle, not per fleet

Each policy has its own issue and expiry date, usually one year apart. Because vehicles join the fleet at different times, expiry dates end up scattered across the whole calendar.

That is the real problem: there is no fleet renewal date, there are forty separate ones. When the one nobody watched arrives, the vehicle is on the road uninsured, which means a fine and impoundment.

A vehicle without valid SOAT also cannot pass the roadworthiness test or complete paperwork, so one oversight chains into several problems.

How the fleets that never slip do it

  1. One list with plate and expiry

Sorted by date, not by plate. What you need to see is next month, not the inventory.

  2. Automatic warning two weeks out

Enough to quote, buy and file the document without rushing. A warning on the expiry date itself is not a control, it is a failure notice.

  3. A single owner for the purchase

When renewal depends on whoever remembers first, sooner or later nobody remembers.

  4. A digital copy the driver can show

The driver has to produce it from a phone. Keeping it only in an office folder does not help at a checkpoint.

Frequently asked questions

Does SOAT cover damage to my own car?

No. It covers the people involved in the accident, not material damage to vehicles. Damage to yours or to third parties is covered by a separate voluntary policy.

What happens if I drive without SOAT?

It is a traffic violation carrying a fine and impoundment of the vehicle, and it also blocks paperwork such as the roadworthiness test.

Can I buy SOAT before it expires?

Yes, and in a fleet you should. Buying a few days early removes the risk of a vehicle going out on route with an expired policy because of a payment issue or a platform outage.
